I thought I would share with you, my transition story. I touched on it in my recent video but here is the more in depth story.
I started transitioning Christmas of 2006. I believe my last relaxer was November of that year. The decision to transition was a spear of the moment kind of thing. I didn't have a plan of attack or specific regimen to follow. I wouldn't suggest rushing into transitioning. I struggled the first few months. I wore my hair straight the majority of my life, and never even heard of protective styling. I began researching and came to find and FALL IN LOVE with a little site called Longhaircareforum.com. It was a blessing to stumble across this natural and relaxed hair heaven. I also attribute my transitioning success to Blackhairmedia.com. I still frequent these sites.
I began to learn different ways to transition and I decided the best way for me to transition, would be to big chop. I just thought it would be quicker and less painful. Now, instead of a total big chop, i did a mini. I cut my hair into a bob. My hair was apl when I was relaxed, so it was still a significant chop. As the stylist took the first snip, I remember these two girls gasping behind me and say "why would she do that?" I just find it interesting how SOME women define themselves by their mane.
By early 2008, I had been transitioning for over a year, while wearing micros and weaves. One day after taking out my micros, I made the ultimate no-no. I began washing my hair, without detangling. OMG, OMG,OMG!!! I was in the shower sobbing like a little baby. My hair was unbelievably matted. I must have wasted an entire bottle of conditioner trying to detangle my hair. I got on the phone and called my mom, crying my eyes out.
That's when I decided, to take it all off. Angry at my own ignorance, I took a pair of shears and began cutting off my tangled, relaxed ends. When it was over and done, I actually felt OK. I thought it was be devastating but it was quite the contrary. I felt free.
I wasn't wearing anybody's TWA though! The next day, I went out and got a fabulous weave, which started my love affair with Remy hair lol.
Here are a few pictures of my natural hair after I got comfortable rocking it...
Until next time,
Love, Peace and Hair grease...
